There is an interesting report that has been released by PEW Internet that has determined that more people are going online to find answers. Is this a surprise?Actually the results were a little surprising to me that the results were not higher in regard to people who actually go online to find answers. I can only begin to guess what the determining factors are. There are several major findings in this report. One is this: For help with a variety of common problems, more people turn to the internet than consult experts or family members to provide information and resources.Another key insight is that members of Gen Y are the leading users of libraries for help solving problems and in more general patronage. In a national phone survey, respondents were asked whether they had encountered 10 possible problems in the previous two years, all of which had a potential connection to the government or government-provided information. Those who had dealt with the problems were asked where they went for help and the internet topped the list:

58% of those who had recently experienced one of those problems said they used the internet (at home, work, a public library or some other place) to get help.

53% said they turned to professionals such as doctors, lawyers or financial experts.

45% said they sought out friends and family members for advice and help.

36% said they consulted newspapers and magazines.

34% said they directly contacted a government office or agency.

16% said they consulted television and radio.

13% said they went to the public library.

Hello, and welcome to my space, or should I say “our” space! I have spent many years in Educational Technology, have participated in many conferences and also been responsible for many of my own presentations. What always seems to at these “events” is that there are the folks that get excited, and then there are the folks that will say that technology is a great tool, but we have yet to find ways where it truly integrates into what we do in a classroom.Although I would love to disagree with this, I believe that (at least for the most part) this is true. Of course, there are the pockets where technology is being used in truly effective ways. So, how to we integrate all the possible, in what people say is the impossible with all the constraints that we have…. filters, AUP, networks, etc?Although this Blog will not be the be-all and end-all, I hope that it will prove a valuable resource on how this journey can begin.Hopefully, we can take all that conference excitement and make the “rubber meet the road!”
